Use a Water Bowl at Songkran for Family Harmony / 🇹🇭 Thailand

Take a small bowl and pour water over an elder’s hands as you wish them good health and family harmony. This is the quieter side of Thailand’s New Year.
Blessings
During Songkran, a little water can say what is hard to put into words. In Rod Nam Dam Hua, the younger person offers a gentle gesture of respect, and an elder has a moment to offer a blessing in return. The point of the exchange is the person in front of you. Think of someone who used to walk you to school, looked after you when you were small or still makes sure you have eaten. If you want to bring the spirit of the Thai New Year into your own home, a small bowl and a quiet minute together are plenty.
How to invite good fortune
- Ask an elder in your family if they would like to try the gesture with you. Set a basin on a table and bring a dry towel so that the moment feels comfortable.
- Fill a small bowl with clean water. Scented water is traditional, but plain water is a practical choice for this home version.
- Invite the elder to hold their hands over the basin. Pour a little water slowly, then tell them one thing you are grateful for and one thing you wish for them in the new year.
- Hand them the towel and pause. If they offer a few words of advice or a blessing, give them time to finish before you move on.

Origins and history
Songkran is the traditional Thai New Year, celebrated in mid-April. Water carries the idea of washing away the old and beginning again. That meaning can take different forms across the festivities: in public, it is the ingredient in a lively celebration; at home, it can be a small gesture between generations. Rod Nam Dam Hua is an opportunity to pay respect and receive a blessing. The bowl, the hands and the few words exchanged between two people tell their own story. When you see photographs of the enormous water celebrations, remember that this modest act belongs to the same holiday. It gives the New Year a completely different pace.
