Blessings

At Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, the water is part of how you approach the shrine. From the marble path that runs around the Amrit Sarovar, the golden building stays in view while its reflection shifts. Visitors cover their heads and remove their shoes before entering the Sikh place of worship. The walk around the pool is called parikrama. On this flight, begin at the edge of the water in the photograph and picture taking the first few steps around it. Think of one person or concern you would like to hold quietly in mind. Give yourself time to notice where the reflection breaks into separate lines.

How to invite good fortune

  1. Open the photograph and look first at the water, then at the gold building above it. Take one slow breath and choose what to keep in mind during the visit.
  2. Picture the marble path around the pool. Follow it clockwise in your imagination and let your eyes come back to the building as if you had arrived at the next side.
  3. Stay with the reflection for a moment. At a real visit, follow the local guidance and keep your head covered; here, give the scene a minute of quiet attention.
  4. Look back to the waterline and let your wish settle. When you are ready to leave, record your arrival in your passport.

Origins and history

Sri Harmandir Sahib is a Sikh place of worship in Amritsar. The building is often called the Golden Temple, but the pool and its marble perimeter are as important to this visit as the gilded shrine. The path gives worshippers a way to circle the Amrit Sarovar in remembrance. Inside the complex there is also a langar, a community kitchen where volunteers serve meals to people who come from many backgrounds. Walking around the water and sitting together for a meal are different experiences with their own rhythms. The photograph captures a quiet view across the pool. Follow the reflection towards the far side and the walls around the shrine start to come into focus too.
