Blessings

Give your wish for prosperity a thoughtful destination. At Zeniarai Benzaiten Ugafuku Shrine, money is washed in water flowing from a cave spring. The resulting fukusen, or blessed money, belongs to a tradition of household prosperity and good fortune. Days of the snake are especially associated with prayers for business success.

Think about what you want money to make possible: caring for your family, developing your work or creating room for an important experience. Choose one purpose that matters to you. The intimate setting, surrounded by stone and fresh water, makes this a lovely place to pause with that intention and give it a clear direction.

How to invite good fortune

Open the official tourism guide and find the cave spring. Take a slow breath, then choose the purpose you would like your money to serve. At the shrine, visitors wash money in this particular spring and treat it as blessed money. Follow the movement of the water and the outline of the rocky space in the images.

Quietly offer your wish for prosperity or for your business to flourish. Spend the final minute with your attention on the spring. When the online visit is complete, add your arrival stamp. Carry one thought back into your day: a use of money you want to value, or a financial decision you want to make with greater care. Let the place give that intention a memorable image.

Origins and history

The spring's founding story begins with a dream of Minamoto no Yoritomo. As he prayed for people to live peacefully, an old man appeared and directed him toward water emerging between rocks. A search revealed the spring, and a shrine was established for Ugafuku.

Hojo Tokiyori later honoured the deity and washed money there while praying for a prosperous household and the wellbeing of future generations. Others followed the practice, giving the water its enduring association with washing coins. The water deity is represented with a serpent's body and a human head, tying the place to its snake-day traditions.

Counted among Kamakura's five celebrated waters, the spring combines a sheltered landscape with a very human hope: using what we have to help our lives and families flourish.
