Take a Lucky Flight to Guanajuato’s Alley of the Kiss and picture a kiss on the third step to wish for lasting love. This narrow passage is where a story told from balcony to balcony becomes a gesture shared by couples today.

Blessings

A kiss on the red third step of Guanajuato’s Callejón del Beso is a local wish for good fortune in love. The place is part of the gesture. Two buildings come so close that the balconies seem to reach towards one another, and the stairway gives visitors a particular spot at which to pause. A kiss made there is the custom associated with this alley.

During the Lucky Flight, look up at the two sides of the passage and think about the affection you would like to look after. The short journey gives that thought a setting: coloured walls, a slim gap overhead and just enough room below for two people to meet.

How to invite good fortune

Look at the photograph of the alley. Notice the warm walls and the lamp projecting into the narrow space. Look up towards the balconies and picture yourself approaching the staircase in the historic centre of Guanajuato.

Imagine stopping on the red third step, the step singled out by the local tradition. If you are doing the flight together, take a moment to share a wish for your relationship. If you are alone, picture the kind of love you would like to welcome or care for.

Put the wish into a few words. Give it a moment of attention and then mark your arrival in the passport on this device. The destination guide beside the photo takes you to the alley’s address if you want to find it in the city.

Origins and history

The alley is known for a local story about lovers who lived on opposite sides of the passage. Its many retellings share an image that is easy to understand when you see the site: the houses are so close that the two people could approach one another from their balconies. In other streets, the view across the way might feel distant. Here the buildings themselves make a meeting seem possible.

The story lives on as a custom visitors can take part in. Couples focus on the third step, painted red, and a kiss becomes a way to ask for good fortune together. The image in the story belongs to the balconies, but the gesture on the stairs is the part that the people who come to see the alley can make their own.
